The Pre-Kindergarten class is made up of children who will enter kindergarten the following school year. Ages are generally 4 and 5 year olds, and 6 year olds who have not yet attended kindergarten. Free play and structured activities are relatively balanced to allow children freedom of expression but also give them opportunities to practice emerging skills such as alphabet recognition, letter sounds, counting and number recognition, fine motor skills such as writing practice, and large motor such as balancing or hopping on one foot. The development of social and emotional skills is crucial to childrens success when they enter elementary school.
We are committed to guiding children in forming positive social relationships with peers and caregivers. Methods we have found successful include helping children find and practice positive and effective words to communicate with each other, suggesting different play partners and helping children engage in activities with different play partners, caregivers play with the children, and suggesting activities that spark common interests among children. Communication between teachers and parents is key to making the child care experience successful.
